Guam Film, “Shiro’s Head”, To Be Showcased at Cinemanila International Film Festival
HAGATÑA, GUAM, USA – The 2008 Guam film, “Shiro’s Head“, has been invited to screen for exhibition at the 2011 Cinemanila International Film Festival. The award-winning film produced, written and directed by Guam filmmakers and GIFF co-founders, Don and Kel Muna, will make its theatrical debut in the Philippines after receiving the invitation from Cinemanila festival programmer Joselito Acosta. “It will be an honor” states Acosta in an email correspondence.
Since its successful and unprecedented world premiere on Guam in 2008, the first Guam film to be produced entirely by locals, “Shiro’s Head” has enjoyed a phenomenal run in the film festival circuits on several countries around the globe from France to Japan in addition to picking up top honors in U.S. mainland film festivals.
“I’m interested as to what the general response will be from the Filipino community, seeing that we have similar cultures and traditions”, says co-director Don Muna. “I believe the underlying message within Shiro’s Head will translate well”.
The filmmaker also adds that most recently, “Shiro’s Head” is being utilized in the curriculum of several U.S. Universities in regards to studies of modern Pacific island identity, change and society, with the most recent analysis conducted at Indiana University – Purdue (alongside such films as “Whale Rider”, “The Land Has Eyes” and “Once Were Warriors”) whose administrators referred to the Guam film as “remarkably well done”.
The 2011 Cinemanila International Film Festival will take place November 11-17 at Market! Market! Cinemas at Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Screening date and time will be announced on the Festival’s website: 2011 CINEMANILA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL.
