ENTRY RULES FOR 2017 GIFF

The 2017 Guam International Film Festival will be held for five days, from September 27th to October 1st, 2017 at the majestic Guam Museum located in the island’s capital of Hagåtña. We encourage filmmakers of any level (student, amateur or professional) to submit works of any genre. We are especially interested in feature films, documentaries, short films, Pacific Asia themed films, family-themed films, animation and student films. Both local and international film submissions are encouraged to submit to the 2017 GIFF for competition eligibility.

We accept only secure online screeners via FilmFreeway, Vimeo or YouTube instead of DVD’s. Not only is this great for the environment, it also permits for a more efficient and prompt screening of your film by our screening committee and Grand Jury members.

All entries must be paid, in full, online through FilmFreeway.com for the category in which you’re entering. Payments must be made in U.S. dollars only. No exceptions will be made. The Festival will not accept payments through mail.

RULES OF ELIGIBILITY

All submissions must be completed by the final deadline listed above and include the correct entry fee. We will not consider films for the 2017 Guam International Film Festival if the submission is incomplete or submitted after July 31, 2017.

Films may be of any length, and of any genre, including features, documentaries, shorts, animation, student films and music videos. Be sure to refer to our GIFF category guidelines below. We are particularly interested in presenting U.S. and World Premieres. The Festival will not consider works-in-progress, films with temporary sound tracks but will consider work that originates from Mobile Devices and DSLR cameras. All films with dialogue in a language other than English must be subtitled in English for Festival submission and Festival presentation. We will inform you of our official selections by August 4, 2017.

Works that are eligible for competition must have been completed after January 1, 2016 and must not have been publicly exhibited on Guam prior to the Festival.

CATEGORIES

Narrative
Feature films in the Narrative category must be 40 minutes or more in length. Narrative Shorts must be under 40 minutes in length.

Documentary
All films in the Documentary category must be non-fiction. Documentary Features must be 40 minutes or more in length. Documentary Shorts must be under 40 minutes in length.

Made in the Marianas
Entries may be of any length, and of any genre, including narratives, documentaries, animation, student films and music videos.
There are no entry fees for submission into the Made in the Marianas category. The following is the eligible criteria for submission in this category:
i.) Films must be produced in the Mariana Islands
ii.) Films must have at least 50% of principal photography shot in any of the Mariana Islands
iii.) All works submitted to the Festival must not be subject to litigation nor is currently threatened by any litigation.

Animation
All films in the Animation category may include live action. Animation Features must be 40 minutes or more in length. Animation Shorts must be under 40 minutes in length.

Music Video
A visual depiction of a recorded original song. Music videos must not exceed 10 minutes in length.

Student Under 18
The Student Under 18 category includes students up to the high school level and does not include college students. Student films include those that are produced and filmed inside or outside the classroom and made either individually or with a group. Student films include those that are made with limited adult supervision. Student Features must be at least 41 minutes in length. Student Shorts must be 40 minutes or less.

The eligible categories for the Guam International Film Festival awards are as follows:
Grand Jury Awards:
Narrative Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short

Audience Choice Award:
Narrative, Documentary, Animation, Made in the Marianas, Student Under 18

Best Made In The Marianas Award:
Made in the Marianas

Best of Festival:
Narrative, Documentary, Animation, Made in the Marianas, Student Under 18

Best Actor:
Narrative, Made in the Marianas, Student Under 18

Note: The GIFF Crystal Awards will be presented only to the receiving filmmakers who are in attendance at the GIFF awards ceremony. Awards will not be mailed to absentee recipients.

EXHIBITION REQUIREMENTS

If your film is officially selected for exhibition, please know that GIFF will require:

(1) The final exhibition format of HD Quicktime.mov file delivered via secure download link (if less than 2GB) or by mail on a USB-powered flash drive (flash drive or external hard drive is fine, as long as it is USB powered). Hard drives requiring AC power (wall outlets) will not be accepted. Preferred delivered codec is Apple ProRes, however, exhibition files using a hi-resolution h.264 compression with AAC audio is also acceptable. Please be sure that audio levels register properly and are not over-modulated.

(2) A digital press kit that includes high-resolution digital images of film stills, cast and crew photos, cast and crew bios, synopsis, production notes and director’s statement (300dpi, suitable for print).

(3) For feature films: film trailers, clip reels, posters, and postcards to maximize the promotion of your film.

(4) Non-English films must be in English subtitles.

(5) All exhibition files and Electronic Press Kits are to be completed and received by GIFF no later than August 18, 2017.

(6) That you refrain from posting your film in its entirety online for public viewing until the festival dates have expired.
